Pete King's Thoughts & Whereabouts: 6/26 - 6/29
July 26 - Friday evening
7:30 p.m. - Midnight
Leave Washington after voting against Cap & Trade Energy bill which passed 219-212. Shuttle flight to LaGuardia delayed almost two hours because of thunderstorms. Arrive in N.Y. about 10:15 p.m. and drive to Ruth's Chris in Garden City in time to catch the end of Joe Cordes' NYPD retirment dinner. Joe, a Deputy Inspector, did a terrific job for NYPD counter terrorism unit which is the best in the country.
July 27 - Saturday morning
10:00 a.m.
Levittown - attended and spoke at GOP rally for 2009 ticket led by County Executive candidate Ed Mangano. Good crowd, lot of enthusiasm.
4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Seaford - saw Pelham 123 with Rosemary. Good movie with great NYC scenery and style.
July 28 - Sunday
8:00 a.m.
To Bellmore for boxing session with Chris Cardona. Hadn't been there for two weeks and timing was off. Will double up by going back Tuesday night.
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Guest speaker at Young Israel of Long Beach. Focused on Iran and my concerns about President Obama's moral equivalance Mideast policy. Received beautiful memento from Rabbi Chaim Wakslak.
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Commencement speaker at New Hyde Park Memorial High School graduation ceremony which was held at Hofstra University. NHP is outside my district but the Principal, Mike DeMartino, was in the 69th Infantry with me forty years ago. He was a Colonel; I was only a Spec 5. Mike has had a great career as an educator.
Monday - June 29
9:00 a.m.
Massapequa Park - met in district office with officials from British Consulate in Manhattan to discuss various national and international issues.
6:30 - 7:15 p.m.
Glenwood Landing - to Swan Club for fund-raiser for D'Brickashaw Fergason's Foundation to help kids who need guidance and direction. D'Brickashaw, the Jets No. 1 draft choice and outstanding offensive lineman, really feels a need to give back to the community. I spoke with him for awhile and he is a terrific guy -- and he expects a great season for the Jets! Running the event was my very good friend Warren who owns the 7/11 at the corner of Beach Street & Park Avenue in Wantagh.
7:45 - 10:30 p.m.
To Woodbury Country Club for seventh annual Seaford High School Patriot Award Dinner honoring the five Seaford H.S. graduates who were killed in 9/11: FDNY Battalion Chief Tom Haskell; FDNY Firefighter Tim Haskell; NYPD Police Officer John Perry; Robert Sliwak; and Micheal Wittenstein. Very moving evening. Full capacity crowd, including the families of the victims. Honorary Patriot Awards were presented to Seaford H.S. graduates Curt Schmitt ('83) Army Captain Marco Kostovic ('99). Fr. Steve Camp delivered a very inspiring Invocation. When I spoke, I commended the Seaford community for not allowing 9/11 to be forgotten.
