News reports and stories all day about tragic shootings of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona. Terrible tragedy. I did not know her well but she is highly regarded and respected. Hopefully, she will survive and recover.
I turned down TV media requests because it would appear to be using a personal tragedy for advantage. Did put out a statement calling the shooting a "tragedy for America" and spoke to WCBS radio and print media. Votes cancelled for next week.
6:15 p.m. - 6:25 p.m. - phone call from DHS Secretary Napolitano who gives me detailed briefing on shooting.
7:00 p.m. - 10:05 p.m. - Rosemary and I to dinner with Larry and Helen Elovich in Rockville Centre. As always, a very pleasant evening.
10:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. - watch 4th quarter of Jets-Colts game. Great finish by Sanchez and Jets (17-16).
Sunday, January 9th
8:36 a.m. - 8:55 a.m. - phone interview from home with Religion on the Line (WABC radio). Discuss shooting of Rep. Giffords.
11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. - to St. Christopher's Church in Baldwin for ceremony elevating Fr. Steve Camp to Monsignor. He is a truly great guy. Tremendous turnout. Overflow reception afterwards.
2:30 p.m. - interview from home with Channel 12 on shooting tragedy.
